Brought to you by the Engineers Committee

So what exactly is Legionella? How can Legionella affect building water systems? Why should building engineers care?

Caused by the Legionella bacteria, Legionnaires' disease is a severe form of pneumonia marked by coughing, shortness of breath, fever, muscle aches and pains, and headaches.

According to a recent Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) provisional data, in Illinois alone, 608 cases of Legionnaires' disease were reported in 2019. The infographic below by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) shows how Legionella grows and multiplies in a building water system.

In addition to Legionella, there are several harmful pathogens  that can cause problems in your building's water systems. A pathogen outbreak could bring about severe illness or even the loss of human life. Moreover, failing to comply with industry standards in pathogen and disease control in building water systems could cause commercial properties both loss of reputation and expensive lawsuits.

Having a proper water treatment and management plan is critical to the health, safety and protection of your building tenants and occupants.

Now that you know how Legionella could affect your building water systems, the real question is--what can you do about it?

To find out, make sure to attend the April Engineers Lunch: Water Treatment - Preventing Legionella and Preparing Your Building for the Summer, where Reid Hutchison, Chief Operating Officer and Mike Griffin, VP of Water Safety Compliance, HOH Water Technology, Inc. will provide an overview on how to prevent a Legionella outbreak in your building water systems.
